GREENWICH — The shovels have hit the ground for a long-awaited bridge replacement project in Old Greenwich that will be causing traffic detours until about July 1.

The area is filled with construction workers and equipment now that work has begun on the project.

Sound Beach Avenue is closed just after the traffic circle around the Perrot Memorial Library — right in the middle of the main route to the village of Old Greenwich.

A detour sends motorists to Harding Road and Forest Avenue to get around the construction area. Pedestrians are routed through Binney Park.

According to the Department of Public Works, 14,500 vehicles crossed the old bridge every day.

The heavily used bridge, which crosses over Laddins Brook, was constructed in 1925 and rehabilitated in 1977, but it was in poor condition, DPW said. It will be replaced with a single-span precast concrete structure that will match the pedestrian bridges in Binny Park.
