A 19-year-old man is improving after suffering serious, life-threatening injuries when concrete slabs shifted on a trailer and crushed him in the cab of his truck in Lake in the Hills, fire officials said.

The Lake in the Hills Police Department and Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District responded around 11:04 a.m. Wednesday to Randall Road and Algonquin Road in Lake in the Hills for a call of a vehicle accident.

A flatbed trailer attached to a blue 2014 KW tractor was carrying a load of concrete slabs, according to police.

Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District Deputy Chief John Knebl said the truck was carrying materials that were being delivered to a construction site at Longmeadow Parkway and Randall Road.

The truck was traveling southbound on Randall Road approaching Algonquin Road.

The driver stopped, causing the load on the back of the truck to shift forward, police said.

The concrete slabs impaled the cab of the truck through the back window and pinned the driver inside the cab.

Knebl said the 19-year-old male driver was crushed against the front dashboard by the concrete.

The man’s brother, who was behind the truck also hauling materials, stopped and called 911.

Whitey’s Towing Service was called to the scene with heavy wreckers and a crane to assist firefighters in extricating the trapped driver.

The man was stable and paramedics were talking to him.

Firefighters extricated the male driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, shortly after a LifeStar helicopter landed at the scene.

He was stabilized and then transferred to the medical flight crew from LifeStar.

The medical flight team flew him to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

Knebl said the man suffered serious, life-threatening injuries. As of Thursday, he was improving and had been stabilized.

“[This is] not something you see every day,” Knebl said, referring to the uniqueness of the incident.

Knebl said it was a “huge collaborative effort” with all of the agencies involved.

Northbound and southbound Randall Road was closed from Algonquin Road to Commercial Drive.

Northbound Algonquin Road was reopened around 1:10 p.m. but Randall Road remained closed southbound from Polaris Drive to Algonquin Road late Wednesday afternoon.

The Illinois State Police Truck Enforcement Unit and the Lake in the Hills Police Department Traffic Accident Investigation Unit responded to the scene.

The incident is currently under investigation by the Lake in the Hills Police Department.

No citations have been issued, police said.
