Manufacturer says September 2021 incident down to concrete-steel hybrid structure not N149 machine

The collapse of a wind turbine in Germany was caused by weaknesses in its concrete-steel hybrid tower, manufacturer Nordex said.

The German OEM launched an investigation after the N149/4500 machine came down at a wind farm in North Rhine-Westphalia state in September 2021.

A report has now concluded that “weak points in the pre-stressed concrete part of the concrete-steel hybrid tower are what caused the accident”, Nordex said, adding that the findings – supported by expert third parties including DNV – “showed no indication of a malfunction within the turbine control system or any other turbine components at the time of the incident”.
